Gainful employment?

From a letter to the Times, June 15 - 'When I registered my daughter's birth the description of my wife as 'full-time mother' was rejected: apparently only 'housewife' is permitted. Moreover, the computer generates the statistical entry 'no gainful employment'.

Does this tell us something about the official view of the contribution to society by women dedicated to rearing their children?'
